A Screen-Free Sabbath

Tomorrow, Sunday, I’m going to be trying out a Screen-Free Sabbath – that is, an entire day away from my phone, iPad and laptop.

I was inspired this week to give it a try after reading about the idea in the Dr Rangan Chatterjee book Natasha reviewed for us recently here.

The idea is having a regular screen-free day away from your emails, social media accounts and internet can really help you to relax, recharge and re-connect with the present moment.

Lately I’ve noticed just how much I do check my phone every day, and it’s something I want to work on. In our house we have always had a ‘no phones at the table’ rule for when we are sitting down to a meal, and I try do this even if I am eating on my own now too, but sometimes I don’t. When I don’t though, I’ve realised I barely notice what I’m eating and then I feel hungry again very quickly – almost as though my brain hasn’t noticed I’ve eaten because it was busy with something else. I really like the concept of mindful eating so this is another piece of this that I will also be trying to stick to going forward.

To prepare for my screen-free day tomorrow, I’ve already scheduled tomorrow’s post here on Happy Magazine. I also turned off the email and social media notifications I would normally get on my phone this morning, and I’m going to keep those off beyond Sunday.

I’m really interested to see how I fare with a whole day away from my devices! I’ll post during the week and let you know how I get on. Hopefully it will be something I can implement on an ongoing basis and perhaps I will be able to inspire you to do the same.
