A little secret: The Po-Ho Inhaler

Some time last year while I was browsing the health shelves in the Avoca store in Rathcoole, I picked up a Po-Ho Inhaler. It was only a couple of euro and it was around the time I was starting to get interested in essential oils, so I bought it.

I’m so, so glad I did.

My Po-Ho Inhaler now has pride of place on my bedside table. I use it almost every night and I just love it.

All it is is a very simple inhaler stick scented with essential oils.

But for me, it’s peace. And calm. And it helps me let my shoulders down an inch or two.

It sounds crazy, right? It’s just an inhaler! But, honestly, it’s so lovely. Here’s what makers A. Vogel say about it on their website…

Po-Ho essential oil for inhalation is made from the highest quality essential oils. It contains a mixture of the essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus, juniper, caraway and fennel. It is available in a 10ml bottle as well as an inhaler stick.

Apart from imparting a nice relaxing aroma, essential oils can also help the body in other ways, forming the basis for aromatherapy as a healthcare discipline. In addition, the essential oils of peppermint and eucalyptus have been used traditionally to help maintain clear, cool breathing – particularly during the cold or flu season.

Alfred Vogel first wrote about Po-Ho essential oil in March 1929 in his first magazine, Das Neue Leben (A Fresh Start). The name comes from Po-Ho, the (Mandarin) Chinese for peppermint, one of the five essential oils in this refreshing classic amongst oils.

The easy-to-carry essential oil inhaler stick is a convenient way of using Po-Ho. To use, you insert the tip of the inhaler gently into your nostril, close the other nostril and inhale deeply. Repeat with the other nostril. It is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.

The scent is so very calming. I like to get into bed and inhale five or six deep breaths of it in each nostril. It really helps me relax just before I go to bed.

I thought I’d share this with you all in case it sounds like a little something you’d like to try for yourselves. While researching the Po-Ho Inhaler for this post, I found that the Po-Ho Essential Oil can also be bought with an Inhalator, I imagine this would be great for colds/catarrh too.

You can buy the Po-Ho Inhaler Stick at most good health stores that stock A. Vogel products. I found them online here at OpenSesame.ie for €4.55, (although the image is of the oil and not the inhaler stick).
