Day trips: Trim Castle, Co. Meath

If you’re currently on a cancer journey you will know that a good day out of the house can do wonders for your wellbeing. If you are going through chemotherapy and staying away from crowded places, or if your energy is low but you’re able for a drive in the car and a short walk, a day trip to Trim Castle in Co. Meath might be just the thing for you.

Trim is a designated heritage town and is renowned as one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns. With the largest and most impressive Norman castle in Ireland, King John’s Castle, the intriguing Yellow Steeple, beautiful streets, parks, walks and summertime floral displays, it’s an interesting and tranquil place to visit.

There is the Trim Castle Hotel right across the road from the Castle for a rest and a cup of tea. There’s a spot of retail therapy to be had in the hotel’s Kilkenny Shop too, if you have money to spend. There’s a lovely (short, if you want it to be) walk around the castle or over the bridge to the Yellow Steeple. Then there’s also the quaint village of Trim to explore too, if you’ve got a little more energy.

Trim is about an hour’s drive if you’re coming from Dublin, so there’s a scenic country drive to watch out the window along the way. If you’re looking for a little somewhere to go to get out of the house and away from your current day-to-day, we think you could make a good day of it in Trim.

Trim Castle is the finest Norman Castle in Ireland, started by Hugh de Lacy in 1173. Almost uniquely, for a Norman Castle of this scale in Europe, it has scarcely been modified since it was completed in the 13th century. Trim Castle was featured as a scene in the Mel Gibson “Braveheart” movie in 1994. Tours of this great Norman Castle are available daily. Open daily Easter to 31 October. Limited opening during Winter. For further details click here.
