If you fancy a little day trip from Dublin and you feel able for a brisk walk, how about Glendalough in Wicklow? Take the scenic route via the N81, Blessington and Hollywood and enjoy the views on the way there. When you arrive, there’s plenty of parking at the Glendalough Visitor Centre and this is a great place to start your walk.
A short walk brings you over a rushing river and to the walking routes towards the Upper Lake. We recommend the boardwalk route for sure-footedness but both routes are beautiful.
Once you reach the Upper Lake, there’s the Lough Cabin for a coffee to warm you up while you enjoy the beautiful views out over the water.
If you’ve got a little extra energy, explore the 11th century Reefert Church ruins nearby or the Information Centre before heading back.
There’s also the very interesting Monastic Village to explore if you find you have another burst of energy before reaching your car once more.
Glendalough is not just for strenuous hikes and backpack picnics – simply exploring the walk to the upper lake makes a lovely day trip too. We recommend stopping at the Wicklow Heather restaurant for lunch on your way home.
